Guests who want to extend their rental are a revenue opportunity. Here's how to make trip extensions smooth, profitable, and a reason for better reviews.

The Extension Request: Pure Upside (Usually)
A guest messages you: "Any chance I could extend the rental by a day?" If you don't have another booking immediately following, this is pure incremental revenue with zero additional cleaning cost (they're already in the car). Handling extensions gracefully is easy money and a customer service win. Handle them poorly and you've created unnecessary friction on an otherwise happy booking.
Always Check Your Calendar First
Before agreeing to any extension, check your calendar. If another guest's booking starts in 12 hours, you need enough time between trips for a clean and transition. If you're free for the next three days, the extension is frictionless. Never commit to an extension before checking — the uncomfortable conversation of "actually I can't" after saying yes is avoidable.
Process Extensions Through the Platform
Always process trip modifications through Turo's official trip modification system. Never extend a trip via a side payment outside the platform. Informal extensions mean the additional time isn't covered by Turo's protection, you don't have a documented agreement for the extended period, and if something goes wrong during the extension you have no recourse through the platform. The Turo app makes this easy — use it.
Your Extension Pricing
Trip extensions are typically processed at your standard daily rate or a negotiated rate for the extra time. You can use this as an opportunity to earn at your going rate or to offer a small loyalty discount for a guest you've had a good experience with. Either approach is valid — just make sure the economics make sense and the modification is processed officially.
The Extension as a Review Signal
When a guest wants to extend their rental, it's typically a sign they're having a great experience. They like the car. The rental is going well. Use the extension interaction as a moment to reinforce the relationship — be warm, be accommodating where possible, and confirm the extension details clearly. A guest who extends and has a seamless extension process often turns into one of your most enthusiastic reviewers.
